Hocus Potions

Hocus Potions

Through out the development of Hocus Potions I provided user research for the team. I would reach out to new playtesters and run different studies to help improve the game.

Thinkaloud

Hocus Potions Thinkaloud report

This included Thinkalouds where the participant would play the game and talk about what they were doing/thinking/trying to do. This helped provide context for the expected to be able to do or what might be confusing. This are some of the most common and one of my favorites to run because you can do a lot of them rather quickly to find a trend.

Observations

Hocus Potions Observational report

For the observational study I would simply watch them play the game and take notes about where they seemed frustrated, confused or enjoyed the game. This meant a lot of note taking and interpenetrating their reactions as they played the game. This is different from a thinkaloud because it allows the player to focus on the game and often times players will do something then come up with a reason for doing it.

I asked 3 different players to each play the game for about 20 minutes, I then sat them down together and asked them about their experiences. The audio for this was recorded and transcribed so that I could share it with the rest of the team. I made sure to include the highlights and major takeaways for them to easily sift through.
